The following is a guest post, in collaboration with one of this blog’s partners.

Even though a new year is upon us, a large portion of the population will be wishing the festive season lasted just a little bit longer. Sometimes it is nice to have a structured routine again, but being able to rest and relax is almost always the preferred option.

Therefore, before you get too down about the prospect of getting back to work, how about booking a last minute holiday to look forward to? Cheaper flights 2014 can be found by leaving it late and you’d be amazed at some of the discount-price travel options available. Here are just a few destination ideas for bargain trips this year.

Sun off the coast of Africa

Thanks to its geographical location, situated just off the coast of northwest Africa, the Canary Islands provide holidaymakers with yearlong sunshine. An average of high of around 21°C in January and February that rises to nearly 30°C at the peak of summer means this Spanish archipelago’s beaches are an incredibly attractive proposition.

The largest and most populous island is Tenerife, which boasts several holiday resorts perfect for those looking to relax and unwind. The Teide National Park, featuring the third largest volcano in the world from its base, makes for a great day out.

Culture in Asia

Another sun-drenched location that deserves serious consideration is Bali in Indonesia. A destination that can seem too far out of reach for many people becomes a lot more affordable at this time of year.

Although this paradise island provides everything a sun seeker could wish for, which includes plentiful opportunities to go surfing or scuba diving, there are a number of cultural delights as well. Visit the 11th century Gunung Kawi temple complex for a little bit of history or the Kuta Theatre to marvel at a magical contemporary show.

Skiing in Europe

Although numerous holidaymakers will want to escape the cold weather, others like to embrace it. But rather than spending your days surrounded by wind and rain, choose snow instead.

From cheaper resorts in Eastern Europe such as Borovets in Bulgaria and Bohinj in Slovenia to better known yet smaller destinations like Rauris in Austria and La Thuile in Italy, there is plenty of opportunities to have fun on the slopes at an affordable price.
