Have you seen an ad for the online eyeglasses store GlassesShop.comand been wondering whether to give them a try?  Well, here’s my personal experience with receiving glasses from this company, which may prove helpful.  Because ordering prescription eyeglasses from an eye doctor’s office is so costly, this appealing alternative of purchasing from an online glasses stores is becoming more and more popular.  I’ve now tried it twice, and although I was initially hesitant… I’m now a pretty big fan, and recommend it.

GlassesShop.com offers both sunglasses and eyeglasses, with a nice selection that is searchable by gender, type, materials, or shape.  I had no trouble finding more than one style that appealed to me – it was actually hard to make my choice.   You pick a frame you love, and the price shown includes free prescription lens (single vision lenses, with anti-scratch coating).  Overall, it’s a HUGE savings from the traditional method of purchasing from your local eye doctor’s office.

So how do you “try them on”?  Most of these online stores have a way for you to upload a photo of your own face, use their tool to mark where your pupils are, and then overlay any of the frames that interest you.  This is very useful, and helps give you an idea of how each frame will look on you.

When viewing a frame you like, just click the blue “Try On” button.   One thing I found a little frustrating with the GlassesShop.com website, was the failure of their interface to calculate any sort of scale.   You can manually adjust the size of the frames… or your own photo… but I felt like it was a guessing game to determine how large the frames actually were.    Not a deal breaker, just an annoyance.  I think they need to get some programmers on it, and resolve this.  (But that’s probably because I’m a programmer geek, and stuff like that bugs me!)

Something I found helpful was using the measurements they list for each frame, measuring the size of my  own sunglasses and eyeglasses I have at home, and comparing these figures.  This saved me from picking anything too tiny or startlingly large.   I went with a mix between a “Wayfarer” and rectangle shape, and was really happy with my new glasses from GlassesShop.com.

I need a high index lens, and these were surprisingly light.  The prescription was spot on.  They are very comfortable, and didn’t need any adjustments (although if you find you do need adjustments to the fit, most optical shops are typically very helpful in doing so, for free.).

It took about 2 weeks for my glasses to arrive, but it was during a busier-than-usual time of year for them.  They came in a small and narrow box, but were sufficiently protected in a plastic glasses case.  A cleaning cloth was also included.

There’s an informative page on “How to Read Your Perscription”, under Help, that makes it easy to figure out how to order.  They seem to run various sales from time to time, for which you can receive notices by signing up for their emails.

The price is right, the product is good… I definitely recommend trying GlassesShop.com, to save money on your next eyeglasses purchase.
