La Concepción Botanic Garden
Popular with travellers of all ages, La Concepción Botanic Garden is known to be one of the best botanic gardens in the whole of Europe.
Containing both formal gardens and a forest, this garden was originally created in the 19th century and are now cared for by Malaga City Council. It takes around an hour and a half to two hours to walk around the garden, but if you take a picnic you can spend a lovely day there with the kids.
Alcazaba of Malaga
An 11th century citadel built by the Hammudid dynasty, the Alcazaba of Malaga is one of the most iconic sights in the city (photo above).
Built on a hill overlooking Malaga, this well-preserved Moorish fortress is now a welcoming and relaxing tourist attraction, boasting gardens, fountains, courtyards and unique features, such as marble columns and the Torre de la Armadura Mudéjar (Mudejar Amroury Tower), which has a carved wooden ceiling which dates back to the 16th century.
Roman Amphitheatre
One for the history buffs in the family, the Roman Amphitheatre can be found at the foot of Alcazaba hill and dates back to 1BC. However, what makes this piece of Roman architecture so exceptional, is that it wasn’t discovered until 1951!
Unlike other existing amphitheatres of the same period, parts of this building have survived, with the tiered seating, access corridors and the all-important stage still standing.
Granada
Make sure you have a whole day put aside to explore Granada, a nearby city which is infamous for the Alhambra, an ancient palace and fortress that is hundreds and hundreds of years old.
Well-known for its gardens and exceptional Islamic architecture, the Alhambra has expanded over the years and is a real treat to explore, as it is full of art and other sights which have served as the inspiration for other work, such as music, film and even, video games.
