My runDisney Princess Half Weekend ~ the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Mission accomplished, and it's a such an amazing feeling!  Participating in a runDisney Half Marathon has long been a goal of mine.  Between enjoying fitness, and being a Disney addict... this was solidly on my bucket list.  (And let's face it, people.  I ain't getting any younger.)  Last weekend I finally got to fulfill the dream, when I ran in the 2016 runDisney Princess Half.  With my mom and daughter both joining me, it was to be a grand Three Generation Girls Trip. Alas, it was not without it's ups and downs.  I also learned a thing or two along the way, that I'd wish I'd known about runDisney events before our adventure began. The Bad   Let's just get the BAD out of the way. American Airlines apparently "discontinued" my outgoing flight a few weeks ago.  Nice.  Although they reassured me they sent an email last November, I never received any notice of this adjustment.  Sadly, it robbed us of our allotted 4 hours to head to the ESPN Sports Complex on arrival night. … [Read more...]

My runDisney Princess Half Marathon Training ~ I’m Over It

First, I'll start by saying it's 15 more sleeps.  And I'm very, very excited for my first runDisney race ever, the Princess Half Marathon!  The Disney resort plans are all in place: ADRs (Advance Dinner Reservations) and FP+ (FastPass attraction reservations).  I've worked really hard to get here.  Six months of following Jeff Galloway's training plan.  Pretty much religiously. The Magic Bands have arrived, and we even scored some adorable new custom luggage tags (American Tourister throws them in with your Disney package mailing). I'm grateful to be able to take my two weekly 30 minute runs indoors at a rec center during my lunch break.  I'm *not* super grateful that it's at a University where 19-20 year old athletes are training, and they frequently lap (and I can only assume pity) me.  But that's another story. The long runs on the weekends have been outdoors.  In Colorado.  In winter.  And they hurt. I know I'm not alone in these struggles.  But it's my blog, so I'm … [Read more...]

See How My 3 runDisney Princess Costumes Turned Out!

UPDATE:  See how we looked in our costumes at runDisney HERE!   It is done!  And not unlike the actual training for a half marathon... it was a fair amount of work.  But there's something quite gratifying about making your own runDisney Princess costume.  A one of a kind, that no one else will be wearing on race day!  It can also save you quite a bit of money (if you're careful, and don't go nuts at Hobby Lobby and JoAnn's). I was on the hook for three princess running costumes, for the upcoming 2016 runDisney Princess Half weekend.  My 10 year old daughter and I will be running the 5k together on Friday.  And I needed another costume for myself to wear during the Princess Half on Sunday.  So what did we end up with...? First let me pass along some valuable runDisney tutu making lessons learned. Making a runDisney Tutu We opted to make our own runDisney tutus, as they are relatively easy and cheap to create.  There are lots of great DIY running tutu tutorials on how to … [Read more...]

You Might Be Training For runDisney If…

This past July, I took the runDisney plunge for the very first time and registered for the Princess Half in February 2016.  It will also be my first half marathon, which is daunting for a new runner like me.  And without throwing out any embarrassing age numbers, let's just say running was easier on my body 20 years ago.  But being the Disney fanatic that I am.... it's totally worth it!  Right? In training these past few weeks, I've noticed some amusing changes in my lifestyle and thinking patterns that apparently go along with training for a runDisney race.  Do any of these seem familiar to you? You Might Be Training For runDisney If... While exercising, you fantasize about churros and Mickey Ice Cream   After a tough run, you logon to My Disney Experience to review your reservations and cheer yourself up.   Your snack stash has been invaded by healthy energy bars and gels.   Instead of online shopping for winter sweaters and … [Read more...]

My runDisney Princess Half Marathon Training ~ I Told Her!

If you've been following the tale of me pursuing my first runDisney race, you may know that the plan is for our Most Excellent runDisney Princess Adventure to be a three generation girls trip.  My mom, myself, and my 10 year old daughter. And that it was a BIG SECRET for my daughter! I registered her and myself for the 5k on Friday, and just myself for the half marathon on Sunday.  Plane tickets are purchased, Disney package reserved.  It's 121 days away (but who's counting?) Running is something I want in my life, to stay fit, healthy, and active.  For that same reason, I'd love to see my daughter embrace it, too.  It kills me how sedentary kids are these days, and it's not entirely their fault.  I want to help her find an activity she loves, and I was hoping a fun event like this would prove to be as much of a motivating incentive for her, as it is for me. I envisioned us running free... side by side.  A strong and happy Mother-Daughter duo. Or maybe a Mother running with … [Read more...]

My runDisney Princess Half Marathon Training ~ Dory Approach “Just Keep Running…”

I've been running for about two months now, since I registered for my very first runDisney race... the Princess Half Marathon.  Woo hooo!  Not gonna lie, progress feels slow.  In my younger days, whenever I would pick up running it seemed I'd experience a breakthrough after about 2-3 weeks.  This time round, no lightning breakthroughs.  (*shakes head slowly, in mild disgust*) This will also be my first half marathon, and I really do have pretty high hopes, thanks to Jeff Galloway. I've been following his run-walk-run method, and it works likka champ!  I'm amazed how spot on his running time charts are, which I would have thought would vary greatly person-to-person.  But sure enough, when I use the 1:1 ratio (run 1 minute, walk 1 minute)... I'm averaging a 13 minute mile.  Just like Jeff said I would.  Pretty cool. I really love this.  If you haven't seen it - check it out.  It's been making running pain free for me, and much more enjoyable. I thought I'd have been able to … [Read more...]

My runDisney Princess Half Marathon Training ~ Trip & Weekend Plans

It's been about a month since I took the plunge and registered for the runDisney Princess Half Marathon - my first ever runDisney race, and first ever half marathon. Because that registration window for the half was around 4 hours long before it filled up, and because I hadn't been watching for, or planning on, it... it was an impulse decision. I told myself I'd make the investment in holding myself a spot, just in case I was actually able to pull off such a trip in February.  I had my doubts. Well, as you may or may not know, once you start making those ADRs ("Advance Dining Reservations", to the non-Disney brainwashed).... there's just no turning back! I was told by a Disney Reservation Cast Member that ALL the Disney Resorts are considered "host resorts" for the 2016 runDisney Princess Half weekend, and will have early morning transportation available.  First decision made:  My mom, daughter and I will be staying at Caribbean Beach. I'm trying to keep the costs down, and I … [Read more...]

I’m Finally Going to runDisney!

For literally years, I've spent hours "dabbling" in running... along with absorbing photos, blog posts, and social media buzz about runDisney events, with longing in my heart.  Running with other tutu-clad, Disney-loving princesses THROUGH THE CASTLE?!  Are you kidding me? Because my family takes trips to Disney World as frequently as possible, I just didn't think such an extra trip/expense would ever be feasible.  But I kept wanting it.  Badly.  And I kept getting another year older, each year when they held the runDisney Princess Half Marathon registrations. If you're not familiar with runDisney, they host weekend events of races, typically held early mornings on routes that wind through Disney Parks before they're open to the public.  They are spendy, spectacularly fun, and fill up very, very quickly.  Plus, you have to be ready to commit far in advance - registration was in July, for the February runDisney Princess weekend.  (FYI, there are other ways to get in... joining … [Read more...]
