Mistaken for Pregnant, at the Gym

Yep.  That’s a real thing that happened to me. I’m still processing it. Mulling it all over. Trying to determine if I find this event a) motivating, or b) deflating in my overall efforts to improve my fitness. So here’s how it went down. Never, Ever Ask a Woman if She’s Expecting. Just Don’t. I liked him at first.  He had brought his own towel laced with eucalyptus oil, and had draped it over the steam vent.  I love this effect, and the steam room smelled much better than it normally does.  So I was appreciative.  We were amicable steam room buddies, at this point.  Off to a great start. Then he asks me a question, in very broken English.  An older Hispanic gentlemen, I couldn’t quite make out what he was saying.  He repeats himself, while rubbing his stomach by way of a demonstrative gesture.  And it dawns on me what he is asking. “Is baby coming?” Ouch.  Am I pregnant?  So apparently I look pregnant in my swimsuit.  That’s awesome. I was so stunned at first, I … [Read more...]

Benefits of a Steam Room… Secrets From the Dinosaur Age?

Fortunately, my sarcastic eye-rolling is hidden in the mist... but I always think it's silly when people in the steam room think they're sopping wet in exclusively their own sweat.   Umm, hello - it's called moist heat.  If you'll notice, the ceiling, walls, and your water bottle are all "sweating", too.   Neat party trick.  I've also questioned the validity of the claim to losing weight by sitting in a steam room. So I've done some research, on various health, beauty, medical and fitness sites to investigate what a steam room actually accomplishes (such as this article from Body Building.  Hey, those guys are serious about their fitness stuff.)    As it turns out, this favorite relaxation activity of mine actually has numerous positive side effects - include fitness, health, and even beauty benefits. But first, a quick story on my steam room muse.  Anytime I need some blog post fodder, it never hurts to head to the gym.  Where there is no shortage of characters.  Especially in … [Read more...]

“You’re Not the Boss of Me” Standoff at the Gym

Sitting in the steam room after my gym workout is my little reward to myself.  As I've discussed previously on this site (in The Gym:  A Real Person's Guide to Getting There) it often serves as that dangling carrot, motivating me to even get there. When the steam room is closed for repair, I'm crushed. But yesterday there were no such road bumps, and I was thoroughly enjoying my steam session, when after about 5 minutes... it stopped.   Now I can take the heat longer than most, and I'm not even close to being done after 5 minutes. A water faucet and short hose is the crude mechanism in place for firing the steam generator back up.  You cool down the temperature sensor near the ceiling by squirting water on it, and the steam kicks in again.  So I stood there with the hose, squirting the sensor.  And squirting.  And squirting.  No steam. How can it be broken?  It was just working fine a minute ago.  I fight back a tear. I'm not nearly saturated enough with heat yet.  … [Read more...]

The Gym: A Real Person’s Guide to Getting There

We are the masses of real people. You will likely not find us teaching a Pilates class or bench pressing our own body weight. But if we could find the time, and the motivation - we'd like to stay active and healthy, and be able to reap the benefits that come from being reasonably fit. For myself, I know I feel lower levels of stress and fatigue when I'm able to include some exercise during my week. And when I do get the opportunity to enjoy some fun outdoor sport or activity with my friends and family, such as biking or a good hike - I like to be in good enough shape to keep up and have fun, not just be frustrated with how tired and out of shape I am. … [Read more...]
