Family Mountain Biking Adventure Puts Sharpie Extreme to Test

About a decade ago, my husband and I moved our young family to Colorado.  We both loved the outdoors, and wanted our kids to grow up with an enjoyment and appreciation of camping, hiking, skiing, and mountain biking. At last we've arrived at the stage in our children's lives where we can all hit a mountain biking trail, each riding our own bike.  Having stuck primarily to hiking for these past few years... this is an exciting development!  It was a rocky start the first few times out, but I've picked up a few family mountain biking tips along the way. So we were excited when Sharpie Extreme approached us, offering to send us on a family outdoor adventure.  The Sharpie Extreme line of permanent markers is particularly well suited to marking your outdoor gear, so they wanted us to put them to the test while mountain biking. Mission accepted! Getting the Family Ready for Outdoor Adventure Getting your family outdoors for an adventure can feel extreme.  Depending on the … [Read more...]

9 Things You’ll Need for an Awesome Family Mountain Biking Adventure

It's that time of year again.  EXCELLENT family mountain biking weather!  As a family, our kids have reached an age (5 and 11) where we are ready to fully embrace this outdoor activity together. We've picked up a few family mountain biking tips along the way.  Here's my best advice on things you'll  need for an awesome adventure. 1. Find a Safe Space for Family Mountain Biking My family recently headed out for a weekend of camping and family mountain biking.  We chose a public lands area where the spaces are wide open, trails are plentiful, and the rules are fast and loose. The unexpected downside?  Motorized vehicles are also allowed on all trails, and the ATV action was in full swing during this busy holiday weekend. Bottom line, the trails weren’t really safe enough for a family with two young kids to ride their bicycles.  We improvised by sticking to our own loop we forged through the trees near our campsite.  Had we known in advance, we would have selected an area … [Read more...]

Every Active Woman Should Give This a Try

This past month I reached a personal fitness goal, and in the same swoop was able to cross off a Disney Bucket List item of mine.  My mom and daughter were my support team, and went along with me to Disney World.  Although our runDisney weekend had some dramatic ups and downs, I was able to complete my first half marathon - the Princess Half. Achieving that milestone felt pretty fantastic.  It was a gratifying trip, satisfied my curiosity about all the runDisney hoop-la, and was an extremely fun experience overall. But hooked on half marathons, I am not. It took me 6 months of training to work up to those 13.1 miles.  Along with a bottle or two of ibuprofen, repeated icing of my knees, entire Sunday afternoons dedicated to long runs in the winter cold, and a fair amount of limping around my office (I ran during my lunch breaks).  For long distances, I need to wear knee braces on both legs.  In short, I've concluded that running isn't for me. So my knees are shot.  What's … [Read more...]

Family Mountain Biking, Whining, and Wrecking

For many, Fruita, Colorado, is a sort of Mountain Biking Mecca.  Nestled along the base of the Bookcliff Range, in wide open desert - there are miles of rolling trails, with a gorgeous big sky backdrop.  Although we live so close to the area, we hadn't yet tackled taking our kids mountain biking there until last weekend. This summer, my youngest son graduated from a balance bike directly to a regular bike.  Some friends gave us a cool Hot Wheels bike, in GREEN, his most favortiest color.  It's a heavy little sucker, but he does pretty good on it. My poor daughter is a tall 10 year old, and has definitely outgrown her Barbie bike.  We've been trying to hold off on that expense until next summer, when I'd like to get her a decent "real" mountain bike she can enjoy the trials with.  She's being a trooper in the meantime. We are in the very early stages of mountain biking as a family, but I have high hopes for us!  My husband loves biking, and used to spend hours doing so as a … [Read more...]
