Skip the Trike, Toddlers Can (Balance) Bike!

Have you ever seen a tiny tyke dashing along on a two-wheeled bike, looking barely old enough to have left the baby stroller behind?  Behold the power of the toddler balance bike, a new outdoor play phenomenon that delivers some easy, worthwhile, and exciting benefits. My son just turned 3, has truly found his stride on his balance bike, and loves every minute that he spends on it.  Frankly, he sheds almost daily tears whenever we need to remove him from it and head back indoors.  But that's a good thing. I can't take credit for the initial discovery of balance bikes.  It was my parents who had admired wee riders from afar, in their local parks, watching them impressively darting along on their Strider bikes. Grandpa thought this was a very cool trick, indeed, and had the balance bike purchase all planned out.  (I'm pretty sure this occurred a few  hours after my son's birth.) Toddlers Can Balance Bike! I won't get into the engineering details here, I primarily wanted to … [Read more...]

Tale of a Waking Baby

What DIDN'T we do wrong?  You know as a parent, when you see yourself making these classic parenting mistakes ... and you are well aware of why you shouldn't do what you're doing ... but you can't seem to stop doing it? As brand new parents, we brought my daughter home from the hospital 6 years ago, not having a clue about what to expect.  Since her bedroom was upstairs, and ours was downstairs - I put her in a pack and play in our room. See, we at least we draw some lines in the sand.  We usually have a handful of things we have all planned out ahead of time,  like... "I will not have the baby sleep in our bed" "I will not send the baby to sleep with a bottle" "I will not cater to picky eating, and prepare a separate meal for my child each night" "I will not be That Lady in Walmart... responding in a harried, nasty voice to my child's repeated inquiries and/or begging in a public place" "I will not tolerate insubordination - the parents are going to be in charge … [Read more...]

I make milk. What’s your super power?

Years ago while using a one room, no stalls restroom at a client site - I observed that it contained an extra, loose chair.  Just sitting in there.  So that's:  sink, stool ... and extra chair.  I tend to prefer order and reason in my world, and I was completely baffled, and somewhat disturbed, by the what the purpose of this piece of furniture in that environment could possibly be?  Little did I know I had just had my first glimpse into the self sacrificing realm that is the Nursing Mommy!Fast forward a few years, and it was me who was headed to a similarly degrading, smallish room for the task.  Now that I have the La Leche League proponents all up in arms for my use of the term "degrading" - please don't misunderstand me.  Allow me to at least defend myself by saying that I nursed my first child until age 2, and am currently nursing my second child who is 15 months.  And I wouldn't have it any other way.  It is an experience that I … [Read more...]
