3 Crucial & Fascinating Reasons to Wear Organic Cotton

It’s my favorite time of year… Fall!  As the temperatures finally start to drop, we get to drag out our cozy sweaters, flannels, and pullovers.   But when you make any purchasing decisions for lovely new items to add to your wardrobe this season, have you ever considered seeking out organic cotton?

Why?

I had heard in general speak that organic cotton is “better for the environment”.  Or that is was better for people to wear clothing made of materials free of pesticides and chemicals, since clothing is in very close contact with your skin.

Those things are true!  But take a closer look at what I think are 3 fascinating and compelling reasons to purchase organic cotton clothing.  PrAna continues to push use of organic cotton in the clothing industry, because they truly believe in the working conditions of people on their source farms.

Top Reasons for Wearing Organic Cotton

#1 – You’re Improving Farmers Work Conditions.

On a [non-prAna], non-organic cotton farm… workers can be seen walking through crops, spraying pesticides on the plants (and themselves) by hand. It’s sad, and disturbing.  Not something you typically think about when you buy a cotton t-shirt!

On the farms prAna uses to grow their organic cotton, the conditions are much, much safer for workers.  They are not subjected to use of toxic chemicals.  (Watch the cool video below, to see some clips of these farms.)

#2 – It Uses Less Water.

When they say organic cotton is more “sustainable”, part of what they are referring to is preserving water.  Organic cotton doesn’t go through as much processing, so it literally uses less water.

You save 115 gallons of water when you switch one t-shirt to organic cotton!

#3 – It Promotes Soil Fertility.

Organic farming processes continually enrich the soil. This type of regeneration is ideal for helping improve the health of our planet.

You are Making a Difference!

When you purchase clothing made from organic cotton, you truly are making a difference.  (Be sure to see my COUPON CODE below if you are interesting in buying anything from that link!)

As mentioned, PrAna believes in assuring healthier working conditions of people on their source farms.  If the source farm growing cotton directly for prAna is organic, it means farmers and their families will not be exposed to harmful and toxic chemicals each day at work.

Plus, prAna eliminates the middle man, and works directly with their organic cotton farmers.  This provides the farmers more security, and they benefit much more financially.

 “Why Organic Cotton Matters” Video

Curious to see some of the actual people from the other side of the world, who work on an actual organic cotton farm, and who work directly for prAna to provide organic cotton?

THIS IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL VIDEO!  Watch it for a sneak peek into the farmer’s village life.

This really made an impression on me… that when I, as a consumer, make the deliberate choice to purchase organic cotton clothing – THIS is the type of family I am helping to support.
