5 Reasons You Need a Raised Garden Bed This Spring

March 29, 2023COMtnMom

Are you ready for Springtime gardening? I am definitely ready! I’ve discovered the beauty of raised garden beds, which are wonderful for many reasons. This year I’ll be adding a Sunnydaze Galvanized Steel Raised Garden Bed to my backyard, which is absolutely gorgeous. I chose the cute, square size and am having trouble deciding what I want to plant in it… there’s so many great options!

Here are 5 reasons you really need to consider getting a raised garden bed this Spring.

#1 – Adds Beauty to Your Yard

Here in Western Colorado, we live in a very dry climate. Water is valuable and scarce. I love the lush look of live plants in my yard, but have to be careful about committing to what will need water. Adding a lovely raised garden bed planter in an area with otherwise bare landscaping rock adds a touch of beauty.

#2 – Workaround For Poor Soil

I’ve attempted to plant directly in our soil, but it’s too poor to really grow anything. Using a raised garden bed allows you to easily control the soil content, and add compost. This gives you more control over the nutrients for your plants, and yields much better results.

#3 – Flexible Placement

Raised garden beds make planting your favorite flowers, vegetables, and herbs possible in almost any location. I don’t have a dedicated area that works for a garden in my backyard. The multiple size and shape options of Sunnydaze Galvanized Steel beds would work well in any nook or cranny you have available. It also allows you to place your garden in an ideal spot to get the optimal amount of sun and shade.

I have a perfect backyard area in mind near our backyard chickens. I can’t wait for it to warm up so I can get started!

#4 – Garden Overflow Option

Awhile back, my husband built me a wooden raised garden bed. I’m a horrible gardener, so I’ve struggled with success. But last year I discovered it worked beautifully to try out making my own compost for the first time. This was a fun and satisfying project, and ended up making my tomato plants go gangbusters!

A little too gangbusters.

Yep, they overshadowed all my other plants, so tomatoes were the only thing I harvested. I know, rookie mistake. But I learned my lesson… and I realized I just need more raised garden beds for additional types of plants this year.

I’m excited to select the perfect plants for my square garden planter. It would work well for herbs or vegetables. So many plant options… such value space.  Maybe I need another planter?

#5 – Easy Way to Compost

Have you been curious to add the earthy-friendly habit of composting to your lifestyle? I was encouraged to do so after visiting with a composter at a local farmers market. Turns out all you really need is a good place to cultivate your compost pile, and a little info on what to include. It’s so fun, and it resulted in the best tomatoes crop I’ve ever grown.

My raised garden bed was the perfect thing to use, to dump in my compost items. It kept them contained, easy to turn over and mix. Then when I was ready to plant in May, I just mixed in a little soil and planted right on top. So slick to use a raised garden bed!

Raised Garden Bed Options

I’ve have both a built-from-scratch wooden raised garden bed that my husband crafted, and a galvanized steel raised garden bed that I got from Sunnydaze as a kit. I highly recommend the Sunnydaze kit option, as it was much quicker, easier, and cheaper than building a wooden bed.  It was simple to put together, and is high quality and very sturdy. It’s even prettier than I expected… I’ll update once I have plants growing in it this summer.
