Camping Recipe ~ Roasted Rolo Marshmallows
The fact that I consider this a recipe tells you a few things about both my penchant for sweets, and my beginner cooking-while-camping skills. (I know, I need to read A Little Campy more often…) However, these are definitely good enough to call a “recipe”!
If you haven’t given Roasted Rolo Marshmallows a try yet, I strongly encourage you to do so during your next campfire.
I spotted this idea online, and was eager to make my own. These are incredibly tasty, and a fun variation on the traditional roasted marshmallows or s’mores.
Rolo candies now come in “mini” size. They are easy to find in a bag – I grabbed ours near the gum and mints, at the Walmart checkout counter.
Some outdoor-lovin’ genius took this to the next level with the thought, “Hey, what if I melted these all gooey over a fire? Perhaps encased in a toasted marshmallow?” Genius, I tell you.
Camping Recipe – Roasted Rolo Marshmallows
The first go round, we tried the purist form: a Rolo mini roasted inside a marshmallow.
Directions:
- Dig a little hole with your finger, into the flat side of your marshmallow.
- Insert one Rolo mini, trying to stuff it far enough so the outer edge is flush with the outside of the marshmallow. (If there’s a trick to this, I have yet to discover it… it takes some wiggling, and your fingers get pretty sticky!)
- Spear the marshmallow from the side – passing through marshmallow first, then a portion of the Rolo, if you can. A roasting stick with a very pointed end will work best.
- Roast slowly over a fire, taking longer than when you typically would to just brown the outside of a marshmallow. It’s best if it heats internally enough to melt that caramel, and this takes some extra time.
These are amazing. But extremely sweet!
So the second go round, we tried a s’mores version. You know, so the grahams could “cut the sweetness” (that expression, referring to something else that’s also sweet, cracks me up). We made our Roasted Rolo Marshmallows, then encased it in graham crackers – leaving out the Hershey’s chocolate layer. Also delicious!
I can’t say which I preferred, as both were very yummy and we found ourselves switching back and forth between them.
Give them a try on your next outdoor adventure!

This was on our FB page too and proved a very popular idea!
Only problem is that we don’t have mini Rolo’s here, only the bigger ones – so we need a HUGE marshmallow to do this!
I tried it with a small choc chip instead, but you are right, it takes a bit of time to get the choc to melt without burning the marshmallow to a crisp!

Ooohhh… regular sized Rolo’s and a gigantic marshmallow sounds pretty good to me! 😉
Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
