Fall is a great time to explore the outdoors wherever you live. Fall is an especially popular time for camping in southern states, where spending a weekend in the woods in the dog days of summer is no one’s idea of a good time. Campers wait until the days cool down before heading up to the mountains, the woods, or lake land and appreciate the beauty of the natural world as the colors change and the air fills with the smell of fresh rain, fallen leaves, and campfire smoke.

Camping Essentials for Cold Weather

The days are warm enough to spend outside, but the weather can always take a turn, and the nights out in the wild can get considerably colder. To make the most of your fall camping trip, you need to come prepared.

Invest in a sleeping bag that’s designed to distribute heat and keep you warm and comfortable. A pad on the bottom will help you get a good night’s sleep and help your back. For extra comfort, you can also bring an expandable pillow that won’t take up too much space in your backpack. One great trick for staying warm: don’t go to bed cold. Sleeping bags are great at retaining your body heat to keep you warm all night, but since your body naturally cools down as you start to sleep, you won’t have much heat to retain. Instead, do something that will warm you up, such as physical activity or having a hot drink. Anything that raises your core temperature will help keep you warm into the night.

Keeping your feet warm goes a long way toward keeping you comfortable on any camping trip. Thermal socks, not to mention hats and gloves, keep you warm and comfortable where you can feel the coldest. As the earth cools down, walking through nature can really bring the chill to your feet.

Not only are thermal socks a must-have for your camping trip, you can also help you stop cold feet this fall in the city. You can easily wear them in your day-to-day life. There are lite and ultra lite versions of Heat Holders socks that you can wear with sneakers or even with dress shoes. While the original thermal socks are seven times warmer than ordinary cotton socks, these are designed to keep you warm but not overheat when you get inside and step into the office.

A camp stove is another great thing to bring on your camping trip. You won’t have to use the fire and its uneven heat source to boil water in a pinch. Camp stoves make cooking easier too if you’re not sure how you’re going to get dinner ready over a live fire. Buy a camp stove that’s easily portable and propane-powered.

Equip Your Tent

Finally, make sure you bring some rugs or carpets to insulate your tent. Trap the warm air inside with you when things cool down at night and you’ll be able to snuggle up without a worry until morning.

There’s no better season to explore the great outdoors than the fall. The temperatures are perfect, there aren’t as many bugs, and the landscapes are beautiful. Get out and explore with the right gear to stay comfortable.

There are some interesting tips in here–I never thought about going to be warm vs. going to bed cold or the rug in the tent! We went camping in Moab in October and I misplaced my kiddos’ gloves! Ugh!!! It was cold!
