Grow Exploring ABC & 123 Board Books for Outdoorsy Kids
Sterling and Sarah of Grow Exploring love sharing outdoor adventures with their three young kids. In a moment of brilliance, they decided “Why not create some children’s books which feature outdoor gear, to both educate and inspire outdoor recreation?” Behold… the birth of Grow Exploring ABC & 123 Board Books!
The result of this brain child is now available as a great series of four ABC and 123 outdoorsy kids board books, by Grow Exploring. They feature photos of gear you’d use while engaging in the popular outdoor activities: camping, rafting, climbing, and skiing. I was really excited when I first heard about them, as this concept is unique and unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.
Grow Exploring ABC & 123 Board Books
Available for purchase either individually, or as a set – we received all four of Grow Exploring’s ABC & 123 books to try out. Although board books were likely designed as a practical and sturdy option for bookworm infants and toddlers (known to slobber on, gnaw on, or generally destroy their reading materials), I knew the topic of these books would make them interesting to both my 3 and 8 year old kids.
- “C” Is For Camping ($7.95) ~ This one is the ABC book, and is the thickest of all four. It is my favorite, as I enjoy the variety of gear it includes. (Ok, and also I just enjoy reading ABC books more than counting books… I think they’re fun.) I spotted a few things I wouldn’t mind adding to our family’s camping collection.
- 123 Let’s Go Skiing ($4.95) ~ These fun colorful pictures will help little ones build their counting skills, while also building their outdoor gear vocabulary. And although this is a cool counting book, I find the bright photos of coats, helmets, and boots also work nicely to go over colors with my toddler, too.
- 123 Let’s Go Climbing ($4.95) ~ Would you know a “quickdraw” or “belay device”, if you saw one? Hey, hey… mom and dad may learn a thing or two, too!
- 123 Let’s Go Rafting ($5.95) ~ I think it was the “7 Rafts” page which tipped the scales for him, and officially made this book my 3 yr old son’s favorite. 🙂 (Note this one’s a dollar more because of the photo layout, and resulting addition of one extra board page.)
Book size is slightly larger/taller than a typical board book. I thought the size was great, as they are still light enough to easily handle, yet offer more real estate for the cool outdoor recreational gear photos.
The pictures are all bright, interesting, and fun. While they include items which your children are likely to recognize, they will also probably introduce them to gear which they’ve not yet seen. That’s part of why I love the concept of these books, as I feel like it gets little ones (and their families) excited about “outdoor play” options.
These books are of nice quality, and are priced very reasonably. They can be purchased online at the Grow Exploring site.
My family and I highly recommend Grow Exploring. You won’t be disappointed. Enjoy! 🙂

I like the 1 2 3 Let’s Go Rafting – my husband is already trying to figure out how soon we’ll be able to take our 10-month-old son (who the books would be for) kayaking with us! (I told him it’s going to be a few years, and that made him sad).
