Meet the Characters of Disney ‘Planes’, Plus 2 Trailers
I like the Disney movie “Cars” so much, I’ll even watch it by myself, in the absence of any children in the room to use as an excuse. I’ve caught my husband doing the same. So I was pleasantly surprised to hear a spinoff “Planes” will be landing in theatres already this summer, on August 9, 2013.
I say I’m surprised because when Disney Movie PR came out with their “2013 Disney Movie” roster late last year (at least the one they send to bloggers), this movie wasn’t on it.
Puzzling that it has suddenly come bursting out of the chutes, and with a tantalizing release date that will be here before we know it. At any rate, someone had a great idea… and apparently someone decided to follow through with it pronto-like. So that’s cool.
We don’t see a lot of movies in the theatre, but we will be there opening weekend for this one. Looking over the character descriptions, my only fear is that they will try to follow the successful Cars/Cars 2 formula so closely, it will somewhat lack creativity. But I’ll try not to jump to any hasty conclusions… Disney is typically pretty long on creativity.
Here’s the PR sheet scoop: “Disney’s Planes will be an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure, featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.”
Holy cow, my 2 1/2 year old is going to flip for this movie. The only thing he loves more than a toy with wheels, is spotting something flying in the sky.
Disney’s Planes – Meet the Characters
Not to be outdone by the memorable and endearing cast of Cars, check out this varied and colorful lineup for Disney’s Planes. Meet the cast of characters, along with a bit about each actor voicing the role…
Skipper (aka “Doc”?)
Stacy Keach (“The Bourne Legacy,” Alexander Payne’s upcoming “Nebraska,” Robert Rodriguez’s and Frank Miller’s “Sin City: A Dame To Kill For”) provides the voice of Skipper, a reclusive old Navy Corsair who takes Dusty’s training to new heights.
Chug (channeling “Mater”…)
Brad Garrett (“Everybody Loves Raymond,” “How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life”) lends his voice to fuel truck Chug, Dusty’s buddy, coach and biggest fan.
Dottie
Teri Hatcher (“Coraline,” ABC’s “Desperate Housewives”) brings life and charm to the say-it-like-it-is mechanic Dottie.
Leadbottom
Cedric the Entertainer (“Barbershop,” “Larry Crowne, “Madagascar”) as Leadbottom, a puttering old biplane who has no time for Dusty’s far-fetched flights of fancy.
Rochelle
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” “Seinfeld”) lends her voice to Rochelle, a tough and confident racer who is the pride of the Great White North.
Bulldog
John Cleese (TV’s “Whitney,” “A Fish Called Wanda”) is the voice of Bulldog, the oldest and arguably wisest racer on the circuit.
El Chupacabra
Carlos Alazraqui (James Garcia on Comedy Central’s “Reno 911”) brings to life the intensely charming El Chupacabra, a racer with more dramatic flair than is recommended at high altitudes.
Ishani
Priyanka Chopra (“Barfi!”) voices the exotic, mysterious and ruthless Ishani, the reigning Pan-Asian champion from India.
Ripslinger
Roger Craig Smith (Captain America in Disney XD’s “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble,” voice of Sonic The Hedgehog in “Wreck-It Ralph”) voices world champion racer Ripslinger—wings down, the biggest name in air racing—and he knows it.
Ned & Zed
Gabriel Iglesias (Comedy Central’s “Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand-up Revolution”) provides the voices of both Ned and Zed, two not-so-sharp saboteurs who work for Ripslinger.
Bravo & Echo (in a cute nod to Top Gun)
Val Kilmer (“Batman Forever,” “Top Gun”) provides the voice of Bravo, a member of the Jolly Wrenches and a fan of air racing.
Anthony Edwards (TV’s “Zero Hour,” “Top Gun”) is the voice of Echo, a member of the Jolly Wrenches and a fan of air racing.
Colin Cowling
Colin Cowherd (ESPN) gives play-by-play coverage as Colin Cowling, an affable blimp and an eye-in-the-sky reporter for the Racing Sports Network.
Roper
Sinbad (Comedy Central’s “Where U Been?”) brings to life Roper, an irascible race official pitty full of sly remarks and colorful commentary.
Dusty
Dane Cook will play the main character Dusty, and is well known for his appearances on Comedy Central, HBO specials, and his successful comedy albums. He recently guest starred on “Louie” opposite Louie C.K., and his film credits include starring roles in a host of films, including “My Best Friend’s Girl” opposite Kate Hudson, “Dan In Real Life” opposite Steve Carell, and “Mr. Brooks”opposite Kevin Costner.
Disney’s Planes – Movie Clip Trailer
Here’s a little clip to whet your whistle. I showed this to my toddler son, and he insisted on watching it a dozen times. Then he uncurled my hand so he could slap me a high five. I’d say he’s excited for the new movie.
(Get a load of that racy Rob Zombie music in the background. It’s like Disney, with a little edge. I like it.)
Aaaaaaand when this second trailer was released, I updated this post and added it, too. I confess, this was in part so I could find it readily and show it to my 2 yr old. Again and again.
