Located just south of the Denver metro area, Colorado Springs is a remarkable family travel destination. Its location nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains gives it a spectacular combination of great weather and beautiful scenery. There are so many fun options to choose from, it can be tough to narrow down which sights, activities, and attractions to include during your stay.
My family has a few stand-by favorites, but we always try to see something new each time we go. Here are just a few of the many Colorado Springs outdoor activities, which can pack your family adventure trip full of fun.
Remarkable Outdoor Adventures
Be sure to bring your love of sunny weather, mountain views, and outdoor fun along with you to Colorado Springs. You’ll definitely want to incorporate some outdoor play in your family trip here. The mild climate makes it ideal to get out and play, no matter when you visit.
The beauty and diversity of this Colorado location offers plenty of trails for biking or hiking. We love to hike a local trail when we visit a mountain town, and my best advice is plan this early in the trip after your kids are tired of sitting during travel. Get those wiggles out… and have fun doing it!
The beauty of hiking is you don’t need much gear, just a pair of sturdy shoes and a bottle of water. Browse this list of the top hiking trails, which will help you to fully experience the beauty of Colorado Springs.
I also love the Outdoor Adventure page of the VisitCOS site, crammed full of exciting ideas. Check it out for inspiration, and further details on local activities. They even include links to coupon deals for some attractions.
World Class Whitewater… for all Ages
How about swim-suiting up, drinking some Brave for breakfast, and trying out whitewater rafting as a family? Even for first timers with children, this can be very family friendly. Rafting companies typically let you take your pick of excitement and ability level. This is Colorado outdoor thrill seeking at its finest!
My family will be trying whitewater rafting for the first time next week on the Arkansas River, near Colorado Springs. With kids ages 7 & 12, I was able to select the mid-level rapids trip. They are so excited, we can hardly wait. I suspect we’ll be hooked after one run on the river.
Garden of the Gods Will Take Your Breath Away
There are some gorgeous landscapes in Colorado. It’s one of the many things I love and appreciate about this state. But the Garden of the Gods is breathtaking and stunningly unique. The brilliant red rocks and interesting formations present as a work of art. Short walking trails are available, and access is quite easy.
Garden of the Gods is not a massively large area. But that can actually be a plus, as you can get right inside and behold it’s wonders without much travel time. It should fit nicely into your adventure trip schedule, while still leaving your family time for other Colorado Springs sites.
Which leaves me to my last recommendation. Don’t leave town without going here…!
You’ve Never Seen a Zoo Like This
One last stop you must include on your family’s adventure trip to Colorado Springs: The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. This wonderful zoo built right up a mountainside is a one-of-a-kind gem that’s not to be missed.
My family never misses a chance to visit this remarkable place. For a sneak peek, check out my Top 5 Experiences at Colorado’s Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
Spoiler alert: They let you feed the giraffes!
Colorado Springs Has So Much To Offer
