Royal Robbins Travel Clothing ~ Metro Stretch Jacket
Royal Robbin’s Metro Stretch Jacket ($90) is a very light weight layer with a distinctive style. It has a zip-through funnel-neck collar and tie closure, which add uniqueness to this jacket’s look. Details like reverse side panels, and a back pleat with a reflective strip add both interest and function.
The fabric is a blend called “Metro Stretch Melange”. It’s a polyester and nylon combination, and is truly feather weight. This makes it a nice option to add to your travel wardrobe, which will take up almost no space whatsoever in your bag. It has a smooth, almost silky texture to it. Along with the stretch, this makes it a breathable, very comfortable jacket to wear.
Because it’s UPF 50+ and yet such a nice, light piece, the Metro Stretch Jacket is a great choice to have on hand for sun protection, without being *too* warm.
It comes in two neutral shades – Charcoal and Light Taupe – and should blend nicely with many of the existing items in your wardrobe.
This piece runs true to size. I’m 5’10” tall, and the sleeves are a teensy bit shorter than I prefer… but they would probably be just right on most women.
The Metro Stretch Jacket has a classy, urban look to it – which isn’t my typical clothing style. However, I like this jacket more than I thought I would! It has a lovely, almost sheen to the fabric, and feels rich to the touch. It adds a nice polish to any outfit I layer it with, and just plain feels good on.
Royal Robbins Travel Clothing ~ Embossed Discovery Pencil Pant
Next up, the Royal Robbins Embossed Discovery Pencil Pant ($70). These pants are travel friendly, comfortable, and seem to be quite durable and ready for adventure. They are described as being made from lightweight nylon and “moves-with-you spandex”, which proves to be an ideal combination in a travel fabric.
If you’re familiar with the Royal Robbins Discovery series (which includes shorts, skorts, and another style of pants), it appears the top fit and waistline design are all similar, and they are made from the same fabric.
There are drop-in welt pockets, two in the rear – one of which is a zip secured back pocket, which I always appreciate having.
These pants dry quickly, and although a fairly fitted style they are flexible and quite comfortable. I noticed that they do wrinkle when sitting for periods of time, but the wrinkles then smooth out quickly after a few minutes of standing or walking. I believe this is fairly standard, as I’ve repeatedly seen similar behavior in other travel pants made from this type of material.
The quick drying fabric really is ideal for longer trips, where you will need to be either packing light or compact items, and/or when you’ll be laundering your clothing during the trip. These pants even feature a Dri-X-treme™ mesh inside waistband which is adds comfort.
The Embossed Discovery Pencil Pant is extremely lightweight, and takes up very little room in a suitcase. Although it’s very subtle, there’s a swirl print design embossed onto the fabric, which can only be seen when the light hits it a certain way. It’s beautiful, and I’ve actually seen their “black” embossed fabric in a local REI store, and think the design shows up even a little more on that color.
Again, I’m tall – so wasn’t sure how the 28″ inseam would look on me. This is my first pair of “pencil pants” (a very hot trend right now), and I’m a girl with hips, so was worried this would be an unflattering style on me… but I do really like how they look.
For sizing, I do think they run a bit small. In this photo, I’m wearing a size larger than I typically do. They are probably a bit looser than intended, but they stay up fine and I really like the fit of this pair. So I’d recommend ordering according to which fit you prefer.
The Royal Robbins Embossed Pencil Pant has many lovely features going for it, and can easily be worn as a dressy or casual pant, depending on what your pair it with. I really like my pair, and know I’ll be wearing them often. And I’ll definitely be grabbing them when I make my packing selections for travel.
