When Your Kids are Too Lazy to Snowshoe

I’m not sure where the winter has gone, but here it is already February and my family hadn’t gone snowshoeing yet.  Which is frustrating.  Because snowshoeing with kids is fun, free, and takes you to beautiful places!  Last weekend we finally had a day to head to Ouray, Colorado and do some snowshoeing.

I packed the snack bag.

I packed the dog bag.

I packed the warm clothes bag.

But apparently, I forgot to pack the anti-lazy pills bag.

Snowshoeing With Kids… Lazy Ones

If I had to guess, I’d say we made it a half mile.  Total.

I mean, I get it… the deep, fluffy snow was amazing.  It was a gorgeous, sunny day.  My kids just wanted to play in that alluring snow.

But can’t we do BOTH?  Can’t we snowshoe down the trail a bit more, AND take time to play in the snow?

Nope.  I guess not.  They weren’t budging.

While it’s not uncommon that my kids drag their feet early in our family adventure days, I usually have a bit more success getting them to rally.  I can usually get them moving enough (I get to use my outdoor voice, after all) to cover a little ground.

The Dogs Are With Me

Then there’s our poor dogs.  They had endured a two hour road trip just to get here, and now we were barely even hiking.  What the heck….?

Me and the pooches finally gave up, and left the slackers behind.  The struggle is real, to get your family outdoors and active sometimes.  You win some, you lose some.

So we went ahead and snowshoed the trail on our own for awhile.

They were happy.  I was happy.  And the lazy kids were happy.

Overall, it was still a very good day.

Ouray Is an Awesome Colorado Winter Town

Ouray is a unique, hidden gem in Colorado.  Nicknamed the “Switzerland of Colorado”, it’s surrounded by amazing peaks.

If you’re really crazy-pants, you can go ice climbing here.  We are partial to Ouray’s natural hot springs pool.  Which is where we headed to soak… after our attempt at snowshoeing.  Let’s face it, that’s what the kids wanted to do the most!
