Cure for the Itchy Disney Princess Gown
Many young girls wear a princess costume when visiting the Disney Parks. Whether it’s on your family’s Disney vacation, or just around the house… do you have a Disney Princess in your household who also values her comfort? Those gorgeous gowns can be itchy!
Not unlike myself, my daughter won’t wear anything uncomfortable.
So beginning with her first Disney trip at age 4, we were faced with a dilemma: Whatever is a Princess to do when she wants to dress up, but can’t take wearing an itchy Disney Princess gown?
A pleasant discovery on our first visit to a Disney World gift shop answered our dilemma: Disney Princess nightgowns!
The Disney Princess Gown Alternative
The Disney Princess nightgowns are lovely, and come in the same themed colors and characters as do the Disney Princess gowns. We had my daughter wear her shorts and t-shirt underneath. The result is a completely soft, comfortable dress up option, which I think is still pretty adorable.
Her 2nd trip, a year later, she chose Belle…
It was a little chilly our 3rd January trip, but Ariel won out with a lovely layered, varying length hemline. The spaghetti straps didn’t make many photo opp appearances, but you get the general idea.
I have to include mention how I love that the Cast Members treat all little Princesses with equal royal treatment.
It warms my heart to see them greet a young girl dressed in a princess nightgown with as much excitement and adoration as if she were completely decked out in the most glittering ensemble a parent’s money can buy. No matter how she’s dressed, when a Cast Member warmly greets a little girl as “Princess”, you can see her glow with the sensation of feeling special.
Disney Princess Nightgown vs. Traditional Gowns
Don’t get me wrong, those Disney Princess gowns are amazing! But even if we did shell out $80-100 for one, my daughter honestly wouldn’t be able to wear it more than 15 minutes. (At least that’s what happened to the gorgeous, light-up Rapunzel shoes we purchased…)
Here’s why we love the nightgown option so much:
- Half the cost – the nightgowns typically run around $35 (at my last check)
- Extremely comfortable for your child
- Fun Princess-style option for girls who would love to dress up, but refuse to wear an itchy gown
- Ends up being a souvenir they wear hundreds of times (literally, in our case) after returning home. I confess, I love still getting to see my Disney Princess on a nightly basis.
So if you have issues with your Princess not wanting to wear an itchy princess gown, check out this option during your next Disney trip. You will find them in many of the larger gift shops at Disney World. The largest selection, plus all those fun accessories, will most likely be found at Castle Couture.

Great idea. They do have beautiful night gowns for little girls. My toddler has a Minnie Mouse gown that looks like it has a tutu on the bottom of it. She wore it to preschool for PJ day and we received compliments in the parking lot on her sweet dress. People didn’t realize it was gown. It definitely would be a more comfortable option.

Genius! Those princess gowns are incredibly itchy…and hot. My daughter never could stand to wear hers in the park and I don’t understand how all those other little girls do it. The night gowns are so pretty too!

I wonder that, too? Sometimes I think maybe it’s a “non-negotiable option” that’s been passed down from mom? It seems like sometimes the parents feel even stronger about their little Disney fan being all decked out, than the little Disney fan does… ha
Thanks for your comment, Ms. Wishes-In-My-Backyard! 🙂 Yaaaay you!
