Stink bugs are aptly named, not because they stink all the time. The aroma is created when they are in danger or crushed. This aroma is distinctive and disgusting.

The good news is that this is the extent of their threat to you in your home. Stink bugs don’t carry disease and won’t bite or sting you. However, they are considered an agricultural pest as they have the ability to damage a large number of plants.

If you’re looking for a reputable pest control company, especially one in Harrisburg, then click here for the best service available. They can eliminate a stink bug issue and help you with preventative measures for the future.

Recognition

The key to dealing with any type of infestation is recognizing the enemy. Sting bugs are brown and tan, usually with a copper patch on their heads, although this can be metallic-looking. They have a triangular plate on their back, which is why they are often referred to as shield bugs.

The average stink bug is looking for somewhere safe to live, the crevices and cracks in your home fit the bill perfectly.

Seal It Up

The first step in keeping stink bugs away is to inspect the outside of your home. Any small crack or gap can be an access point for a stink bug. You need to repair the gaps as quickly as possible to prevent the stink bugs from getting access to your home.

This includes adding screens to your windows and making sure they are in good condition.

You should also check around any pipe entry/exit points, such as around your air conditioning unit. Any gaps need to be sealed.

Diatomaceous Earth

This fossilized substance is full of tiny sharp edges. It’s harmless to you, children, and pets. But, the compound damages the exoskeleton on insects such as stink bugs. This causes the bug to dehydrate and die.

Simply spread it around your home or where you know the stink bugs like to go.

Essential Oils

One of the best essential oils at repelling a variety of insects, including stink bugs, is mint. The aroma is strong and repulsive to stink bugs. Simply spray it around the room, especially on window and door frames.

Note, this is great at keeping stink bugs away, it won’t kill them.

Garlic

Stink bugs are generally not fans of garlic. That makes this a natural and effective way of keeping stink bugs away from your home. Simply spread the garlic cloves around the perimeter of your home, it will work on other insects as well as stink bugs.

Turn Off Lights

Most bugs are attracted to light. By turning the light off you’ll deprive the stink bug of a fixed point to aim for. This will also prevent them from getting trapped inside your light fittings and releasing their scent. The fact that this will also reduce other bugs entering your yard and your home is simply a bonus!
