Oh la la ~ Velata Chocolate Fondue!

May 25, 2012COMtnMom

Taken from the French verb meaning “to melt”, fondue has been a popular dish in North America since the 1960s.  Originally composed of melted cheese in which to dip your bread, it has blossomed and evolved to an even more delightful level:  chocolate!

If you are familiar with the Scentsy company, you are aware of their design technology which utilizes a light bulb housed in a charming ceramic container to heat (melt, and release the aroma of) scent cubes in a top tray.

Well some clever person at Scentsy took that concept and adapted it to a new, ingenious use:  Welcome Velata … a brand new line of chocolate fondue warmers!

In addition to the attractive fondue warmer options available, you get a mouth watering selection of four types of Belgian chocolates to choose from:

  • White Chocolate
  • Milk Chocolate
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Caramel Chocolate

A nearly impossible decision to make, if you ask me, because each of them sounds delicious.

For review, I selected a “Blue Razz Curve” warmer along with some dark chocolate.  Mind you, this is just to get the party started.  I intend to try all those yummy flavors at some point!

What a fun party idea, don’t you agree?  You get the benefit of a different, interactive, and delicious dessert … plus it’s very easy to do.

The warmer is gorgeous and funky, providing great presentation for your culinary treat.  Included are 4 matching fondue forks, with the option to order additional forks.  You can also order a matching lid for your top tray, in case of leftovers.  Yeah, right.

How Does the Velata Warmer Work?

The top tray is made of silicon, and fits nicely on the top of the warmer.  You actually melt the chocolate in the microwave, then add it to your Velata fondue warmer.

The instructions say to pre-heat your warmer first, which didn’t take more than 5 minutes.  The genius of this design, is there is no scorching or burning of your yummy fondue.  The warmer keeps it at a perfect temperature.

My consultant gave me another hot tip, which I will pass along to you.  The chocolate comes in plastic pouches with a spout.  It says to microwave it right in the pouch, and then pour it into your Velata warmer.

However … there is no reason you can’t cut it open and pour into a microwaveable bowl first.  This allows you easier access to scrap every drop of that melted chocolate into your Velata tray!  So I followed her good advice, and I agree this option works well.

It was a tough decision whether to share my initial fondue experience with friends and family, or whether to hole up one evening locked securely in a room by myself?  After some thought, I concluded that while it would be a good time to indulge in all that chocolate alone … it would be an even better time to share it.

What Should You Dip in Your Fondue?

So what do you use for dipping?  Fruit and any kind of pastry work well for chocolate fondue.

We tried:

  • Bananas
  • Strawberries
  • Apples (I thought this would be weird, but it was really good)
  • Marshmallows
  • Oreos
  • Pretzels
  • Rice Krispie Treat cubes

We took a vote on favorites.  And the winner was… Rice Krispie Treats!  Of course, strawberries zoomed in for a close second place finish.

I love making desserts, and always offer to bring them to friend’s dinners or potlucks.  I’m really excited at having this new option.  My Velata fondue pot and I are going to be friends for many years, I can tell.
