Point6 makes high quality merino wool socks for the entire family, for just about any activity.  They’ve got a nice selection of designs and styles to choose from, and feature sock options for men, women and kids.  I had heard very good things about them, from a fellow outdoor blogger (and experienced gear tester), so wanted to have my family give them a try.

So what does their name mean?  Point6 is named for 98.6° F, the body’s optimal temperature.  It stands for the temperature stabilizing properties inherent to Point6 merino wool, which help naturally regulate your body temperature.

Not all merino wool is created equal, and Point6 prides itself on using “highest quality merino wool fibers, combined with state of the art spinning and knitting techniques to create exceptionally soft merino products”.

The Benefits of Merino Wool

Merino Wool is a natural fiber with numerous benefits, including being able to moderate both hot and cold temperatures – keeping your feet at an optimal temperature and comfort level.  You can read more about the properties and benefits of merino wool, on this nifty page here.

Although my apparently sensitive skin is typically bothered by regular wool socks, that does not appear to be the case with Point6 Merino Wool socks.  I was excited by this discovery, as you really can’t beat the warmth and comfort of wearing these natural fiber socks.

Here’s what we thought of the Point6 Merino Wool socks we tried out.

I tried out a pair of Point6 Merino Wool Women’s socks, from their “Lifestyle” collection.  First, let me say that I personally think they’ve got THE ABSOLUTE CUTEST selection of colors and designs, over any premium sock brand company that I’ve seen!

They sent me a pair of these lovely “Lifestyle Polka Stripe Extra Light 3/4 Crew”, which are ideal for my everyday use.   There’s a time and a place for “boot” styles of sock, with compression bands and elasticity to hold them in place, and prevent them from slipping down (and Point6 offers those, too).  But for casual daily wear, that style is too tight on my leg.  These are perfect, and SO comfortable.  I highly recommend them for casual use!

I really have my eye on these, too, and may have to place another order soon.

Overall, I was thrilled to find this particular sock.  I was nervous about the potential “itch” factor, being a sock made of wool, but can honestly say I’ve experienced no itch discomfort whatsoever.  And my feet truly do stay the perfect temperature when wearing them.

Well, all of the above obviously holds true for the kids socks, as well.  But my kids scored an even thicker/cushier style.

Although you may not be able to stock your kids drawers plumb full of high quality, premium merino wool socks like this…  I’m a believer that it’s an awfully good idea to have at least a couple of pairs available for them, for outdoor play.

Especially in winter, they can go a long ways towards making up for less-than-toasty footwear.  Personally, it gives me more peace of mind when I take my toddler sledding to know that he’s got his Point6 merino wool socks on, and his feet are staying warm.

The funky boys style we tried (although you can get this in ‘girl’ colors, too):   Kids Skulls Crew.

I recommend following their sizing charts, since it really is helpful to get the correct size. In true frugal mom fashion, I thought I’d “size up” for my 3 year old.  So the pair we received are a bit too big for him (again, my fault), and this misplaces the padded heel significantly. But he still wears and enjoys them, and he’ll grow into them eventually.  🙂

I’ve got comfort-driven children (not unlike their mother), so if these socks didn’t feel good on him… he would be pulling them off!  Which he doesn’t.  I can tell he likes them, and gets a kick out of pulling them all the way up to his knees.

And my 3rd grader tried out these:  Point6 Kids Gum Drop.

Holy cow, these are cute! They go up to her knees.  And she really, really liked them.  Until she wore them to school for an entire day.  And then she declared she LOVED them!  When I asked her what she liked about them, more than her other socks, she said, “It’s hard to explain, but they do feel different.  They feel better.  And they are nice and cushy inside.”

Both of these kids styles go pretty much up to their knees, and seem to be the perfect amount of fitted.  They don’t slide down, but they aren’t so tight that the kids don’t want to wear them.  Comfortable, cute, & practical.

Point6 makes a superior product that is useful, comfortable, durable, and fun!  I highly recommend them, as I found them more comfortable (and offering more attractive styles), than other competitor wool sock  brands I have tried.
