We like to give our children the best we can afford, so they have a happy and healthy childhood.  And one thing we like to get right is their bedroom.  So, when they’re ready to have their own room, it’s nice to be able to decorate it in a way that gives them a fun yet safe environment to sleep in and thrive.

If you’re thinking of decorating your child’s bedroom, here’s some aspects you might want to consider.

The practical aspects of the bedroom

A child’s bedroom should be fun, but it should also be practical.  Ways to make it practical include having lots of space-saving storage, such as under the bed drawers and shelves, and well-made furniture that can cope with children’s rough and tumble.

Using a durable floor covering and a wall paint that can be wiped clean, will help with general wear and tear.

Making sure it’s safe

There are safety considerations in every room of the house, but the bedroom is a place where your child is likely to spend time unsupervised, so it needs thought.  Some furniture, including a lot of flatpack furniture, can be unstable unless it’s secured to the wall.

Other safety aspects to consider are fitting rails to bunk beds, removing dangling cords from blinds and drapes, and making sure there are no electric leads trailing across the floor.

Dreaming up a great place to sleep

But it’s not all about practicality and safety in a child’s bedroom.  There should be plenty of fun elements and a touch of creativity.  Beds should be colourful and comforting, so they’ll want to clamber in and hopefully go to sleep!

And when they’re awake

Why not introduce an adventurous theme to the room, such as the wild outdoors? By painting a mountain scene on the walls and setting up a mini tent on the floor, they can use their imagination and pretend they’re an intrepid explorer. Whatever idea you have, go wild!

And finally, we’re back to practical matters again.  You may not be a DIY expert or have the time to take on a room refurbishment yourself, so hiring help can be a good idea.  You can easily hire a decorator and you can even find people who will assemble furniture for you, so that can really take the strain away.

And one final tip: when hiring help, do check whether painter and decorator prices include the paint needed, or whether you’ll need to supply that yourself.
